Project Objectives
  • Create a Publication with a Cohesive Look and Feel Throughout: Although the publication would be made up of 10 works from different authors and follow different formats, we needed to create one visual identity to carry throughout the publication.
  • Optimize Files for Print and Digital Publication: The publication itself would need to fulfil various use cases, and so we needed to include these various file types within our deliverables to the client.
  • Create a Digital Marketing Package: This package would include various mock ups of the product and pre-made marketing assets for social, and was to be sent to each of the author's marketing teams to be shared through their organization's pages.
  • Create a Marketing Strategy for Print and Digital: This package would include various mock ups of the product and pre-made marketing assets for social, and was to be sent to each of the author's marketing teams to be shared through their organization's pages.
Project Objectives
Process
  • Briefing: To kick off the project our team met to discuss the brief, ask questions regarding vision for the final and determine a timeline for production.
  • Copy Editing: Before any design work started, I wanted to make sure content was finalized. I worked together with the authors on a few rounds of revisions. When copy had been signed off, our team met again to consider the best order for the different pieces would follow. For this we used key cards and a whiteboard.
  • Story Boarding: Using pencil and paper I went through the copy again, this time loosely dividing it into sections and highlighting / pulling out pieces I imaged could be reworked as graphical elements. With this I started the story boarding process.

  • Design Iterations: Having identified a story board for each spread, I started working on a few design styles and spread layouts. I found inspiration in the idea of a 'roadmap' and started playing with some ideas of how to make to connection visually. The biggest challenge was finding a way to make each chapter stand out as seperate, while still maintaining a consistent look throughout. Eventually I landed on using a color gradient to signify a 'road', with each chaper being a 'stop along the way'. This gave me a fun way to use color to differentiate between chapers while still tying them back to the whole.

  • File Finalization & Handover: After a few rounds of reviews and revisions I finalized the files for both print and digital. As part of the handover package we put together a centralized folder of digital assets to be shared with our partners and used in our digital marketing efforts.

A few of the assets we made and shared with our partners to aid marketing efforts.

  • Marketing Strategy for Distribution: As part of our digital marketing strategy, we created a landing page for sign-ups to download the publication online. We also launched various social media campaigns. Print distribution was reserved for special networking and sales events.

The publication was further optimized for digital download.
